About NH Psychiatry

Thoughtful psychiatric care with a practical, personal approach

NH Psychiatry provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adolescents and adults in New Hampshire, with care centered on careful assessment, clear treatment planning, and ongoing collaboration.

The Practice

Psychiatric care designed around the individual

NH Psychiatry is an outpatient psychiatric practice in Alton, New Hampshire, providing evaluation and ongoing medication management for adolescents and adults.

Care begins with understanding the whole picture, including current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatment, medications, day-to-day functioning, and individual goals.

From there, treatment may include medication management, monitoring of response and side effects, education, brief supportive interventions, and coordination with other healthcare professionals when appropriate.

The goal is to provide psychiatric care that is thoughtful, understandable, and useful in everyday life.

Your Provider

Matthew Hersey, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Matthew Hersey is a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and the owner and clinician of NH Psychiatry.

His approach to psychiatric care is practical and collaborative. Rather than treating a diagnosis or symptom in isolation, treatment considers the patient’s history, current circumstances, previous response to treatment, preferences, and goals.

Patients can expect straightforward communication, careful medication management, and treatment decisions made collaboratively rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

NH Psychiatry was developed to provide a more personal outpatient setting where appointments can remain focused, clinically meaningful, and centered on the individual receiving care.

Philosophy

Our clinical approach

Treatment is guided by clinical evaluation, diagnosis, previous treatment history, medication response, safety, patient preferences, and how symptoms affect everyday life.

Thorough Evaluation

Care begins with an understanding of symptoms, history, previous treatment, medications, functioning, safety concerns, and treatment goals.

Individualized Treatment

Recommendations are tailored to the individual, with attention to effectiveness, side effects, safety, preferences, and daily life.

Ongoing Follow-Up

Treatment is reviewed over time so medications and recommendations can be adjusted based on response, tolerability, and changing needs.

Working Together

A collaborative approach to treatment

Psychiatric treatment works best when patients and providers can communicate openly and work toward the same goals.

Patients can expect clear recommendations, appropriate follow-up, and careful monitoring. In return, we ask patients to attend scheduled appointments, communicate honestly about symptoms and medication response, and participate in treatment decisions.

For adolescents, parents or caregivers are included when appropriate while respecting the developing independence and privacy of the patient.

Consistency

Regular follow-up supports safe prescribing, medication monitoring, and continuity of care.

Communication

Questions, concerns, medication response, and side effects should be discussed openly so treatment can be adjusted when needed.

Collaboration

Treatment decisions are made together, with recommendations explained clearly and patient preferences considered.

Fit

Who we work best with

NH Psychiatry is best suited for patients and families who are ready to participate actively in care. This includes attending scheduled appointments, completing requested forms, communicating clearly, taking medications as prescribed, and working collaboratively on treatment goals.

For adolescents, care works best when both the patient and family are willing to provide accurate history, support follow-through, and participate in treatment planning.

A good fit may include patients who are…

  • Seeking psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management
  • Motivated to participate actively in treatment
  • Able to attend appointments consistently
  • Open to discussing symptoms, history, and treatment goals honestly
  • Willing to follow through with treatment recommendations
  • Looking for a focused, professional outpatient psychiatry practice
